How
do you use your golf index at courses you play?
Let's say that your
index is 9.9, and you are going to play a course from
the white tees. On the scorecard it will give a slope and
rating for each tee box. Let's say for our example that for
the white tees the slope is 126
and the rating is 71.2.
Each course should have a conversion sheet in
the pro shop for their slopes and ratings. Ask to see the
sheet and you will see that for a slope
of 126 and an index of 9.9,
your handicap on that course from the
white tees is 11. So if you are having a good
day, you should probably shoot around 82, or about 11 over the
course rating.
Now say you are going to have a match with your
buddy who has an index of 23.2.
When you look up his course handicap on the table, his
course handicap is 26.
So you have to give him
15 strokes.
Since your handicap is based on your best 10
rounds out of the last 20, you are considered to be playing good if you "shoot your
handicap".
